The Office of the Whistleblower (OWB) was established in 2016 to administer the OSC’s Whistleblower Program as set out in OSC Policy 15-601. The OWB is a unit within the OSC’s Enforcement Branch that is made up of a specialized team of accountants, lawyers and support staff who are focused on encouraging whistleblowers to come forward and report misconduct.
Whistleblowers perform a public service by providing inside knowledge on misconduct that would otherwise be difficult to detect. With the assistance of these whistleblowers, we can prevent further harm from coming to investors and better protect the integrity of our market.
Our program aims to:
- stop people who are breaking securities law and prevent or reduce investor losses
- act as a deterrent to anyone considering violating the Securities Act (Ontario)
- encourage businesses to improve their internal compliance systems
- prevent people and organizations from retaliating against a whistleblower or making efforts to silence whistleblowers
Along with providing robust protections to whistleblowers, ours is the first and only whistleblower program by a securities regulator in Canada that offers a financial award.
