OSC announces new course offerings for small and medium enterprises

TORONTO –  The Ontario Securities Commission (OSC) announced today that it is adding four sessions to the ‘OSC SME Institute,’ which offers free educational seminars for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to help them understand the requirements of being or becoming a public company in Ontario. The program helps SMEs keep up to date with evolving regulatory requirements related to market access, capital raising and cost-effective regulatory compliance.

This fall and winter, the OSC will offer courses covering:

• Appropriate mineral disclosure for mining issuers;
• Best practices for meeting continuous disclosure obligations;
• Capital raising for small and medium enterprises; and
• Insider Reporting and the System for Electronic Disclosure of Insiders (SEDI).

This will be first time that insider reporting and SEDI will be covered. Sessions on disclosure for mining issuers, best practices for disclosure obligations and capital raising, which remain of critical interest to issuers, have been updated to reflect current trends and the OSC’s observations.

From 2012 to 2015, 838 attendees participated in 23 ‘OSC SME Institute’ sessions. The program continues to inform SMEs in industries across Ontario on avoiding common deficiencies and navigating Ontario’s regulatory requirements. It also gives SMEs the opportunity to hear first-hand from OSC Staff on the latest issues that have an impact on their markets.

The mandate of the OSC is to provide protection to investors from unfair, improper or fraudulent practices and to foster fair and efficient capital markets and confidence in the capital markets.
