About the OSC

General Counsel’s Office

The General Counsel’s Office (GCO) is an in-house legal, policy, strategy and risk-management resource to the OSC.

The GCO focuses in particular on the legal authority and accountability of the OSC and on legislative and regulatory initiatives. The GCO also serves as the liaison between the Securities Advisory Committee and the OSC.

The GCO provides legal and strategic advice in a range of areas. These include securities regulation, statutory interpretation, administrative law, corporate/commercial law, information technology/intellectual property law and privacy law. In addition, the GCO provides advice on freedom of information access requests, corporate governance matters and conflict-of-interest management.

The dynamism of the capital markets is always creating new challenges for the OSC. In this environment, the GCO assists the Commission in acting in a fair and transparent manner consistent with its mandate and supports the OSC as a whole in achieving its goals and priorities.
