What is RSS?

RSS (Really Simple Syndication) is a general term to describe a new method for sharing and distributing Web content, such as current news headlines. Using an RSS reader, you can view data feeds from various sources that prepare information for RSS access. The data feeds are aggregated for you by your RSS reader.

Using the RSS reader of your choice or by integrating the feed into a web-based feed reader, you can access the latest documents typically highlighted on the OSC homepage in your favourite online environment.

Benefits of RSS:

  1. Receive news headlines and summaries through your desktop's RSS feed reader, as the news items are published 24 hours a day, 7 days a week from various sources simultaneously
  2. Content is delivered to your desktop's feed reader keeping you up to date immediately
  3. View summaries before linking to the full news article saving your valuable time and effort

How do I access RSS?

Generally, in order to view our RSS feeds on your computer, you will need a program that is RSS enabled. These programs are designed to check the feeds you have subscribed to at regular intervals for updated information and will bring them to your attention without the need to visit various websites manually looking for new content.

The following are the most common methods used to subscribe to a feed.
  1. Most modern browsers and e-mail software have RSS as a built-in feature and you can follow instructions provided by whatever software you plan to use for viewing your feeds.
  2. You can download an RSS Feed Reader, which would download and display RSS feeds for you (information on obtaining a stand-alone RSS Feed Reader can be found further below).
  3. You can use a web-based service like iGoogle, My Yahoo!, or Bloglines. Follow the instructions provided by the web-based service you have chosen to use.

How to use RSS on Internet Explorer 6.0?

Internet Explorer (IE) version 6 does not have built-in support for RSS.

However, you have the following options available to you.

  1. Upgrade Internet Explorer to version 7.0+
  2. Download and install an RSS plug-in specially designed for IE 6
  3. Download and install a stand-alone RSS Feed Reader
  4. Use a web-based news service like iGoogle, My Yahoo, or Bloglines
If you’re an IE user, the first option is most likely the easiest to implement and upgrading to IE 7.0 is free. Click here to download Internet Explorer 7.0 from Microsoft. Once on Microsoft's website, scroll down to the bottom of the page and select the most appropriate download for your operating system and click on the go button.

How to use a stand-alone RSS Feed Reader program

A number of free and commercial RSS Feed Readers are available for download. Many Feed Readers are separate, "stand-alone" programs. You can use your favourite search engine to obtain links to sites where you can download a Feed Reader.

How to use a web-based news reader?

An alternative to downloading and installing a dedicated news reader is to use a Web-based news reader service like iGoogle, My Yahoo!, or Bloglines.
