We are looking for (2) second year law students who are interested in working at the Ontario Securities Commission this summer in the Compliance & Registrant Regulation (CRR) Branch.
The CRR branch consists of integrated, multi-disciplinary teams including professional staff (chartered accountants and lawyers), registration officers (corporate and individual), and support staff. The branch oversee the dealers, advisers, and investment fund managers that the public relies upon when investing in securities. The student will support the team in its policy development work, compliance reviews, registration files and the analysis of applications for exemptions from securities laws and hearings into registrants’ conduct. The student will have an opportunity to become very involved in a variety of projects.

The CRR summer law student will be involved in all aspects of the work done by the legal team, including:
- providing research and drafting support for policy work
- reviewing and processing (with supervision) applications for exemptions from registration requirements under the Securities Act and the Commodity Futures Act
- assisting with hearings where a dealer or adviser’s registration status is being reviewed by the Director or Commission
- attending meetings to observe and participate in discussions on registration issues
- responding to public inquiries on registration issues
- assisting registration officers with day-to-day registration issues
- participating in compliance field reviews
If you are interested in this opportunity to build experience in securities law, you should have an aptitude for, and an interest in, legal research and writing. Courses in administrative law, corporate law and/or securities regulation would be an asset.
