What is a cease trade order (CTO)?
A CTO prohibits trading in any securities by or of a person or company in Ontario permanently or for a specific period of time. The OSC may make a CTO if, after holding a hearing, in its opinion it is in the public interest to do so.
When is a temporary CTO issued?
When the OSC is of the opinion that the length of time required to conclude a hearing could be prejudicial to the public interest, the OSC can make a temporary CTO. In some cases, a temporary CTO may be extended until a hearing has been completed. See the OSC's Enforcement proceedings page to learn more about particular enforcement hearings.
